What is ISKON

  • The International society for Krishna consciousness was formed in 1968 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, on the order of his spiritual master to succession going back directly 515 years to the time when Lord Caitanya appeared in India , and from there, still further back-5000 years-to the time when Lord Krishna first spoke the Bhagavad-Gita to his Disciple Arjuna.
  • Krishna consciousness is experienced as a process of self-purification. It's means and end are an open secret, and there is no financial charge for learning Krishna consciousness or receiving initiation into the chanting of Hare Krishna. The gist of devotional service to Krishna is that one takes whatever capacity or talent the or she has and dovetails it with the interests of the Supreme Enjoyer, the Lord, Sri Krishna. The writer writes articles for Krishna , and we publish periodicals in this way. The businessman boes business in order to establish many temples across the country.
  • The householders raise children in the science of God, and husband and wife live in mutual co-operation for spiritual progress. These activities are done wnder the sanction of the expert Spiritual Master, and in line with the Scriptures. Devotional service in Krishna consciousness means regular chanting in the temple, hearing talks about the pastimes of Krishna from Srimad Bhagavatam, and taking foodstuffs prepared for and offered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • By books, literature and records, the society is dedicated for awakening the worldwide public to the normal, ecstatic eternal position of favourably serving the will of Krishna . Sankirtan-congregational chanting-is carried to the people: in public parks, schools, on T.V., in the theatre and on the streets. Krishna consciousness is not an idler's philosophy, rather by chanting and by engagement in the service of Krishna , anyone who takes part will experience the state of “Samadhi,” ecstatic absorption in God-conconsciousness, 24hours a day.
  • As the philosophy of Krishna consciousness is non-sectarian, any man, Hindu, Muslim or Christian, will become better in his faith by chanting the Holy Name of God and by hearing the Bghagavad-Gita. With out knowledge and loving service to the One Supreme God, there can be no religion. Let everyone rejoice in the Sankirtan Movement, and we may see the fulfillment of the prediction made by Lord Caitanya 515 years ago: that the chanting of the Holy names of God, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, would be carried to every town and village of the world. Only in this way can real peace prevail. It is sublime and easy.

History of ISKON Tirupati

  • It was well known over the years that ISKCON has grown in the matter of spiritual popularly throughout the world and to-day it is widely recognized by theologians, scholars, students and laymen as a genuine and important organization for protecting and preserving the spiritual welfare of all. The reason for this is twofold:
  • first and foremost, the spiritual master and Founder Acharya of ISKCON. His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was a spiritual leader of substantial and purity. As the representative of the unbroken chain of disciplic succession from Lord Sri Krishna Himself, Srila Prabhupada is celebrated as the leading exponent of Vedic knowledge and culture of this age.
  • Secondly, the philosophy and lifestyle of the devotees in Krishna Consciousness movement is grounded firmly as per the teachings of Srimad Bhagavatam- As it is and Srimad Bhagavad-Gita.
  • It was in the year 1974-75; His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada made a visit to Tirupati-Tirumala as a special guest of the Government of Andhra Pradesh. During his stay at Tirumala, Srila Prabhupada was extremely pleased to have Darshan of Lord Sri Venkateswara. He was also pleased to see hundreds and thousands of pilgrimage devotees visiting the divine place daily.
  • During the course of his discussion with the then Endowments Minister of A.P., Sri Sagi Suryanarayana Raju, Srila Prabhupada pointed out that T.T.D.should take steps for propagating and reviving the message of Bhagavad-Gita, immediately on large scale. His Divine Grace said it is the only way to bring peace and harmony throughout the world. Since T.T.D. has the basic infrastructure it should work out some program and take the assistance of the devotees of the ISKCON to conduct vigorous preaching for the benefit of all.
  • By the mercy of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna in 1982 a humble beginning was made to this end, and to-day the vision of Srila Prabhupada is becoming unfolded. The management committee and the Executive office of T.T.D. have been very kind in providing a beautiful, large place to land at the foot of the divine Tirumala Hills. In 1983 a small brahmachari ashram was conducted to train young missionary devotees from around the world.
  • On the 10 th April 1984, a small temple was inaugurated by installing the most beautiful ‘Archa Vigraha' if Sri Sri Radha Govinda. In Order to effectively carry out the mission of broadcasting the science of Vedic Knowledge, a master plan is made in the year 1997 with an approximate cost of Rs. 15 Crores expected to be completed by 2005.
  • A unique nature of this project would be that it is expected to receive the entire financial contribution from book distribution as people from all over the country and particularly from South India, visiting this great holy place, at least once a year. This temple project (A CENTER FOR VEDIC CULTURE AND TTHEOLOGY) will create a strong spiritual base for India, from where this universal message can easily reach one and all.
